Specifications

Length Range 5'2" - 6'4"
Volume Range 31 - 57.1 L
The Sweet Potato is Dan Mann's high performance groveler, designed for small, weak, and gutless surf. It is built wide, flat, and thick with a swallowtail and a deep double concave through the tail that Firewire says makes the board feel narrower when turning on rail. Firewire recommends it for 1-5' surf, best from waist high and under, especially in flat, fat or weak wave conditions where a longboard might otherwise be used. It uses Firewire's Helium Core (stringerless EPS with Paulownia and Balsa rail strips), available with either Fiberglass or Volcanic (basalt) lamination. Sizes range from 5'2" to 6'4", with volumes from 31L to 57.1L. Customer reviews describe it as easy to paddle into waves early and suited to surfers wanting extra float and glide in poor conditions, including at least one self-described intermediate/advanced overweight surfer.

A superb board for the heavier dudes when the waves are small.

I got this board because my beloved cheap and cheerful fish came to the end of it's life. Also, after 3 days of epic chest-to-overhead-high surf, the east coast swell faded and it was time to bust out a grovler.

Now we're cooking with the Sweet Potato. This is the most fun, fastest, manoeuvrable board I've ever ridden in small surf. It catches waves like my 9ft longboard and rides faster than the fish. I rode it in 1ft knee high to 4ft chest high waves and could not believe how easily it paddles into waves.
